The Friends of Charleston National Parks is pleased to announce that they have been awarded a grant from the Joanna Foundation. Funding will support the Kids to the Parks program which sponsors bus and boat transportation for Charleston County School District Fourth graders for educational field trips to Fort Sumter. The trip includes a pre- and post-trip classroom visit by an NSP Park Ranger.

“The Joanna Foundation grant will allow us to provide access to even more students in our own community. It’s an amazing experience to watch the young learners have the love of history spark ignited, and it is heartwarming to witness the first boat ride for many of these students. For some students, it is their first visit to downtown Charleston and a National Park”, said Cheri Yates, Executive Director of the Friends of Charleston National Parks.

As the official philanthropic partner of Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park and Charles Pinckney National Historic Site, the Friends group inspires appreciation and support for Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, US Coast Guard Historic District at Sullivan’s Island, including Charleston Light, and Charles Pinckney. Donations and grants support education and preservation programs.
