Your Donations Help Make This Possible!

Thank you for helping to make this season of our Kids to Parks – Fort Sumter initiative a hit! We’re thrilled to have served over 400 students from the Charleston County School District, as well as 30+ teachers and parents. With generous support from the National Parks Foundation and individuals like you, we’re able to give teachers the opportunity to take their students out of the classroom to learn about and experience the unique history and environment of Fort Sumter. For many, it’s their first visit to a national park and often their first boat ride. While the program aligns with state social studies standards, Friends Executive Director Cheri Yates adds, “I think this gives fourth graders a sense of place; they can be where the history happened which is most powerful. The program addresses climate impact and features inclusive storytelling and fosters future stewards.” Read on to see what the kids had to say about their experience this year! Next up Kids to the Parks – Fort Moultrie this spring!

What The Kids Had to Say

A Letter From Madison

Dear Charleston National Parks Community,

I loved the trip and learned any new things. I loved that there was still bullets in the walls and could see the damage clearly. It was amazing to see the cannons and the fingerprints in the bricks. Though I thought there would be more I loved and saw every person life’s work there and I will remember every last bit. Even how cold it was and the funny animal stories they told at our school and we very much appreciated it. Thank you!

Sincerely, Madison
